Songbook #18
Kris and David and I left for a hiking trip in the Waldo Lake Wilderness, and in the car approaching the wilderness, we listened to Neil Young's Harvest. This was an enormous mistake. The chorus of "A man needs a maid" repeated endlessly in our brains, and still does.
Old Man is a wonderful song, and I have an idea that attaches to it. I try to live like this: I look back at my life from the perspective of my future (old man) self. If what I'm doing now makes old man me smile, I'm doing well.
In 2009, on my birthday, I made Kris take me to a restaurant in a weird part of downtown Portland, and afterward, to Valentine's. We sat in the balcony and talked about life. He was finishing law school and I was thinking about applying. He explained that part of his reason for going to school was this:
