Over the next few weeks, I'm going to link you to one of my favorite songs and then write a couple paragraphs about why I love the song. I'm taking this idea from Nick Hornby's Songbook. It is his idea and he's a great writer, so you could also buy his book. Hornby says:
A couple of times a year I make myself a tape to play in the car, a tape full of all the new songs I've loved over the previous few months, and every time I finish one I can't believe that there'll be another. Yet there always is, and I can't wait for the next one; you only need a few more things like that, and you've got a life worth living.

I'm starting with this Nina Simone song because it's been a regular feature in my life for the last decade, and because some folks could use it right now. I got a copy of this recording, live at the Newport Jazz Festival, around the time I graduated college. It came with me to Peru, it weathered Portland, and now makes a regular appearance on my ipod in New York. It endures with me.
The charm of the song is simple: it makes you feel better.
Trouble in mind, yes I'm blue, but I won't be blue always.
The sun's gonna shine in my back door someday.
I could write about all the Nina Simone songs. Here are two more that I love deeply: Flo Me La and Four Women.
