PERIPHERY: Surinam, Vanuatu, the Maldives

NEW YORK. "Just as to someone from New York, Athens or Istanbul is the periphery, for me, New York is the periphery." Quote removed from context in Times Sunday Mag.

Origin of PERIPHERY: Middle French peripherie, from Late Latin peripheria, from Greek periphereia, from peripherein: to carry around, from peri- + pherein: to carry. Merriam-Webster.

Suriname
- Poem by Robin Raveles

One Tree
So Many leaves
One Tree

One River
So many creeks
All flow to one sea

One head
So many thoughts
Thoughts including one good one

One god
So many ways to worship him
But one father

One Suriname
So many kinds of hair
so many colors of skin
So many languages
One people

Vanuatu
This place is an idea. The idea is that it's so far from here.

The Maldives

Twenty-six atolls, trade routes, turmoil in my totebag.
